Understanding God’s Unconditional Love

A dramatic illustration of sunlight breaking through dark clouds, casting rays of light over rocky terrain with patches of grass.

During our last service, we listened to a song called Jireh by Maverick City and Elevation Worship. This song speaks to many of us who feel we aren’t “good enough” to go to God. The lyrics begin:

“I’ll never be more loved than I am right now
Wasn’t holding You up
So there’s nothing I can do to let You down
It doesn’t take a trophy to make You proud
I’ll never be more loved than I am right now, oh”

How can that possibly be true? God is so great, so mighty. God is the one who pulls the strings of the Universe!

““Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements?
Surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
To what were its foundations fastened?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?”

God who is the great I AM cares about me? Out of all the world, He still sees me?! Yes!

In Isaiah 43:1 He says, “…Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine!”

God, Yahweh, is a personal God. He calls us out individually to have a deep and profoundly personal relationship.

God doesn’t want us to follow a checklist or be perfect to come to Him or talk to Him. He doesn’t take pleasure in sacrifices (Psalms 51:16-17). Instead, He wants us to listen to His quiet voice (1 Samuel 15:22). He seeks to be with us in both good and bad times and to support us in our doubts. Why? Because He can handle it! His name, Yahweh, means “He brings everything into existence,” which includes you!

Jireh, the song, continues saying:

“If He dresses the lilies with beauty and splendor
How much more will He clothe you?
How much more will He clothe you?
If He watched over every sparrow
How much more does He love you?
How much more does He love you?”

Love. There is a term in the Bible used to describe the love of God, Agape. It means:

  • Selfless
  • Unconditional, not expecting anything in return
  • Highest form of love
  • God’s love for humanity
  • Faithfulness
  • Commitment
  • A deliberate choice

Can we think of how God showed His love for us in the Bible?

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

John 3:16

God gave His one and only Son, God made flesh; He sacrificed Himself for us. Because He refused to keep going with anything separating us from Him.

God wants us, you, me. No barriers. No walls. He just wants us as we are. Let Him take care of the rest. Just sit in the silence. No weightlifting or magic words. Be still. Let go!

I leave you with this poem from BrokenBelievers.com:

GOD WITH US

Glory of the Holy One, robed in majesty
Omnipresent King of kings, deserving pageantry
Deity incarnate be, because of love for you and me

Willingly He came to earth, left His throne behind
Immanuel, Son of God, seeking to redeem mankind
To leave mankind dead in sin was not what He designed
His love and mercy, on the cross, there with grace combined

Understanding His great love is for us what Christ desires
Sinners to trust in Him alone is all our God requires

Amen!
