Sermon
“since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed;” –Romans 3:23-25
For those who did the Scripture readings, my question should be easy. What is atonement?
“Then Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the Israelites, and all their transgressions, all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat and sending it away into the wilderness by means of someone designated for the task. The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to a barren region, and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness.” – Leviticus 16:21-22
“The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Now, the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you: you shall humble yourselves and present the Lord’s offering by fire, and you shall do no work during that entire day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before the Lord your God. For those who do not humble themselves during that entire day shall be cut off from the people. And anyone who does any work during that entire day, such a one I will destroy from the midst of the people. You shall do no work. This is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your settlements. It shall be to you a Sabbath of complete rest, and you shall humble yourselves; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening you shall keep your Sabbath.’” – Leviticus 23:26-32
Based on these readings, do you now understand what atonement means? Have your views changed?
Atonement is a huge deal to Yahweh. It is the act of making up for a transgression against His instructions. We all fall short. There was only one man who walked the earth who was without sin. Who might that be?
Yeshua HaMashiach! Jesus Christ! The Holy Messiah! The lamb that was slain!
Those living prior to the Savior had to make sacrifices due to their iniquities. There was a whole day set aside for it. There were different sacrifices and offerings depending on who or what it was. Grains, bulls, goats, lambs, turtle doves, and even first fruits. All had purpose. All had significance. The blood of an animal was the atonement. Blood was life. Life was found for a person through that atonement so they wouldn’t be cut off from God nor their community, His chosen people. Being cut off meant death, be it physical or spiritual.
If Yahweh is pure love, can you imagine no having access to that? Not to mention, atonement was not for everyone under the Old Covenant. It only applied to the Israelites. The Gentiles (non-Jews) were never allowed access. Most of us here would be outside that promise. But thanks to Yeshua we have been atoned for. For all time. All people (1 John 2:2).
“So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God. For our sake God made the one who knew no sin to be sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
“So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being!”
For those who attended services in-person would have taken part in an activity to hammer home the concept of this sermon. Below is the summary:
“I need a single volunteer. Take a piece of paper and write your name on it. Then, I will have you pass it around the room. Each person who holds it represents the sins of this world. Each person must damage the paper in some way.”
As the paper was passed around the room, Pastor Alex would shout a sin to represent the damage.
“Illegal drugs! Alcoholism! Abuse! Insecurity! Bullying! Lying! Stealing! Regrets! What if’s! Why me?! Why this?!”
“Now that everyone has had a turn, give the paper back to the original person. See all the harm that has come to it? I want you to try and fix it. Maybe try smoothing it out. Is it the same as when I first gave it to you? No? Well, here is a new one. You see, this moment represents you coming to God. Yeshua HaMashiach has made you new again. Yahweh no longer can find the damage. It never happened. It doesn’t take the pain. It takes away the blame.”
“So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being!”
If we know this truth and we know what He has brought us through and out of, how could we ever keep quiet about it?
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:13-16
Be the salt. Don’t keep Jesus and the Good News hidden. Testify to your new creation as we are washed white as snow through Him.
